Mental Health Resources for California Residents | In Alphabetical Order
Finding mental health support in California can feel overwhelming, especially when
you’re already struggling. This page gathers state agencies, crisis lines, advocacy
organizations, and community programs into one place so you don’t have to piece the
search together yourself.
If you’re in immediate crisis, don’t scroll. Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide
and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day at no cost. If you’re in danger right now,
call 911.
How To Use This List
The resources below are organized alphabetically and cover a wide range of needs.
Some are statewide agencies that manage California’s behavioral health system. Others
are national organizations with strong California programs. Several are built for
specific communities, including Black, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander, Native
American, LGBTQ, veteran, and senior populations, because culturally responsive care
makes a real difference in whether treatment works.
A few things worth knowing as you look:
Crisis lines are free and confidential, and you don’t need to be suicidal to call one.
Many people reach out when they’re overwhelmed, panicking, or simply out of options for
the night.
County behavioral health departments are often the fastest route to low-cost or no-cost
care. Every California county operates one, and they can connect you to services you
may not know exist.
Advocacy organizations like NAMI California and Disability Rights California can help
when the system itself is the obstacle, whether that’s an insurance denial, a
coverage dispute, or trouble getting a provider to respond.
When you’re ready for ongoing therapy
Crisis resources and directories serve a real purpose, but they’re built for immediate
needs rather than sustained work. If what you’re carrying is longer-standing, whether
that’s anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship strain, or a life transition that knocked you
sideways, working with a licensed therapist over time tends to produce different results
than a one-time call.
Authentic Gains provides virtual therapy to clients throughout California, including
EMDR for trauma, individual therapy, and specialized support for teens, parents, and
adults navigating major transitions. Sessions happen over a secure HIPAA-compliant
platform, so you can meet from anywhere in the state.
If you’re not sure whether therapy is the right next step, a free 20-minute consultation
is a low-pressure way to find out.
